The French higher education system is characterised by the coexistence of several types of institution. The principal institutions are universities and Grandes \u00c9coles.<\/p>\n
Grandes \u00c9coles \u2013 these prestigious and uniquely French institutions \u2212 are either public or private. There are around 250 Grandes \u00c9coles in France, offering degrees in business, engineering, political science and other specialized fields. Some of the Grandes \u00c9coles are members of the Conf\u00e9rence des Grandes Ecoles (CGE). The Engineering Schools are controlled by the Commission des Titres d\u2019Ing\u00e9nieurs (CTI).<\/p>\n
The higher education system has harmonised the qualifications they award with those of other European countries by adopting the LMD (Licence Master Doctorat or Bachelor\u2019s \/ Master\u2019s \/ Doctorate) system.<\/p>\n
Each level can be attained by acquiring ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System).<\/p>\n
